* Burgers By Josh

Thank you to Jason from Spooning Australia (@spooningaust) for the invite to Burgers by Josh.

Burgers by Josh (BBJ) have taken over the Annandale Hotel, setting up in the space just past the main bar. They kicked things off here with their 'McDowell's Monopoly Menu' - a tongue in cheek response to Maccas, offering a choice of four burgs, chicken nuggets and Mcfluffy shakes.

Jay and I opted to try a different burger each, going for the Big Mick and the Royal with Cheese. We paired them with the Chicken Nuggets for a bit of variety and a shake to wash it all down.

Big Mick - Two Wagyu beef patties, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a sesame seed bun
 Drawing inspiration from one of the world's most iconic burgers from the Golden Arches, whilst also pulling off a double entendre, is BBJ's Big Mick.

This signature stack had all the best features of the great burger but was 'beefed up' to say the least. The thickness of the patties alone left any burger lover feeling pretty damn excited. The sauce was generous and the lettuce not in ridiculous quantities.

As with the other burgers, the patty was juicy and cooked just enough to keep it moist and prevented it from becoming too dry. The sauce was a beautiful layer that brought a creamy addition to the rich burger.

There was one downside to this burg: slippage. The burger was all over the place, with the sauce and lettuce acting as the lubricant.

The bread was good but under the stack fell apart with the moisture of the ingredients, adding to the mess.

Overall the burger was nice, rich and filling but ultimately very messy.

You know what they call a Quarter Pounder in France?
Made up of a wagyu patty, onions, pickles, mustard, ketchup and a sesame seed bun, the Royal with Cheese IS a tasty burger!

I really loved the mustard and ketchup combo - it provided a nice tarty-sweetness that complimented the thick, juicy wagyu patty that still had a slightly pink centre.

The pickles were sliced amazingly thin and lent a beautiful salty hit to each mouthful of burg that was merrily washed down with a Young Henry's Newtowner.

Chicken Nuggets
The chicken nuggets were succulent pieces of fried chicken and I found them to be a great side with our burgers. I'd love to see more sauce variety in the future with these bad boys!

Chocolate McFluffy Shake
BBJ's Chocolate McFluffy Shake is modelled on Maccas' thick shake, but with the added bonus of alcohol. Unfortunately, it didn't have that thick shake feel you get as you slurp your way through a Maccas shake - though it was still refreshing. We also found it a little light-handed on the alcohol content.

If you’re in the mood for a mid-week burger and beer sesh, consider the Annandale Hotel / Burgers by Josh combo for a quick and tasty feed with some great tap beers.
