*Thank you to the Food Critics &
Bloggers Australia Community and Creperie Suzette for inviting me to try this
menu. Thank you also to Jamie ( @xoxo.msjamie ) for your company
during this tasting.
Just like a crepe, Creperie Suzette is a
little bundle of France as soon as you walk in the door. The atmosphere is
warm, rustic and feels like you're in a small cafe along the cobblestone
streets of Paris. Creperie Suzette uses ethically sourced produce to create a
range of sweet and savoury crepes with a hint of French inspiration.
The store presents itself in two forms; as
a sit-down cafe, and as a hole-in-the-wall takeaway coffee shop offering
something for those who seek convenience as well as accommodating the relaxed
lunchers and brunchers.
Personally, I love how the store is
completely filled with natural light and is tucked away from the complete
hustle and bustle of the busy markets. It almost feels like a sigh of relief
walking into this cute little cafe and taking in a delicious crepe. The board
and menu had a mix of both French classics (such as the beautiful three cheese
crepe) and some modern twists (Peking duck crepe?).
After Jamie and I picked an item each from
the savoury and the sweet menu, we were lucky enough to watch the beautiful
crepes being made right in front of us. The skill involved in making a rapidly cooking
crepe with multiple ingredients was amazing to watch.
It was also interesting to see the difference crepe bases both in colour
and in texture. sThe sweeter crepe is usually a thinner consistency and has a
slight sweetness in the crepe itself. However, the savoury crepe has a slightly
thicker and elastic texture and can be cooked for longer.
(Left to Right) La Biquette - Goats Cheese, Fresh Pesto, Vine ripened tomatoes and rocket La Fraise - Fresh Strawberries, Dark Chocolate Sauce, Walnuts and Fresh Double Cream |
The La Biquette crepe was wonderfully warm
and comforting from the chilly winter day outside. The crepe batter itself was
earthy and sturdy, holding in all the delicious filling well. The combination
of goats cheese and pesto cut through the acidity of the tomato and bitterness
of the rocket. As a non-vegetarian and a carnivorously inclined person, I was
actually quite happy with this crepe. The generous serving of goats cheese was
beautifully warm and salty which balanced the sweetness from the tomato. I was
very satisfied with the savoury crepe and the warmth that came from every bite.
On the other hand, the La Fraise was a
number of textural delights in every mouthful. The batter for the sweet crepe
was thin and slightly sweet. The dark chocolate and strawberry added a
beautiful sweet element whilst the walnuts and heavy cream cut through the richness.
I really liked the occasional crunch of walnuts as a change of texture throughout
the dish. It was a nice crepe overall and I'll definitely try the apple one in
the future.
Creperie Suzette is a cosy little escape
from the windy and bustling streets of The Rocks and the crowded market
outside. Personally I preferred the savoury crepe a little more, only because I
prefer savory food in general, however both crepes were made beautifully and
were perfect for the weather. The coffee was also wonderfully made and a
delicious accompaniment for a couple of plates of warm filling crepes.
I can't wait to see what they do with
fillings and flavours in the future.
